Cities and rural communities across Canada will see significant economic and quality-of-life benefits as 5G is deployed. According to a new report commissioned by the Canadian Wireless Telecommunications Association and developed by Accenture Strategy 5G will add 250,000 new permanent jobs to the economy by 2026. It also estimates that 5G impact will reach $40 billion CAD of annual GDP contribution by 2026. The report, “Accelerating 5G in Canada – Benefits for Cities and Rural Communities“ examines how the deployment of 5G can benefit both cities and rural communities. It highlights 5G as a key enabler for a number of...
Canada Huawei 5G
According to a recent media report, Canadian key intelligence agencies - the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) and the Communications Security Establishment (CSE) - are divided over whether Ottawa should block Chinese telecom giant Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd. from supplying equipment for this country’s next-generation 5G wireless networks. CSE and CSIS were tasked with conducting a cybersecurity review to evaluate the risks as well as the economic costs to Canadian telecoms and consumers of blacklisting the equipment supplier. The Americans and Australians -- who are partners with Canada, Britain and New Zealand in the Five Eyes intelligence-sharing network -- have...

Ericsson Concordia 5G
Ericsson has extended a 5G security partnership with Concordia University in Montreal, Canada, through a new industrial research chair awarded by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC). The main objective of this Industrial Research Chair (IRC) program is to develop a series of solutions to improve the security of cloud and edge computing virtual infrastructures based on network functions virtualization (NFV) and software-defined networking (SDN), with special application to virtual radio access network (vRAN). The new knowledge and technologies that would be transferred to the industrial partner and the Canadian telecommunications industry through this research include...

GSMA North America 5G
A new GSMA report highlights North America's global 5G leadership. The report - The Mobile EconomyNorth America 2019 - part of GSMA’s ongoing Mobile Economy report series was published at MWC Los Angeles by GSMA Intelligence, the research arm of the GSMA. The study sees a rapid expansion of 5G coverage across the US and Canada and estimates that by the end of 2022, 24% of connections on the continent will be on 5G networks, rising to 46% by 2025 – equivalent to 200 million 5G connections. High subscriber penetration coupled with historically high consumer spend on mobile services means the...
Prague 5G Security Conference
Security officials from EU nations, Japan, the United States and Australia gathered in Prague on Thursday and Friday to discuss 5G cybersecurity threats. The two-day conference held under the auspices of Prime Minister Andrej Babiš hoped to develop a series of non-binding recommendations on how to approach future cyber threats emerging from 5G technologies. The recommendations would also contribute to discussions within the EU and NATO on a common approach towards cyber threats. Building a path towards consensus in 5G security is the right thing to do. A more science-based approach agreed to by the majority of the countries is the...
5G gear 5G security standard Huawei
For years U.S. and some of its allies are claiming that Huawei should not be trusted and that the Chinese company is likely to have backdoors in its 5G gear. Today's report from Bloomberg is already being held as the "smoking gun" by the supporters of the U.S. position. Bloomberg alleges that Vodafone, the largest mobile network operator in Europe, found backdoors in Huawei 5G gear between 2009 and 2011. With these backdoors, Huawei could have gained unauthorized access to Vodafone's "fixed-line network in Italy." It wouldn't be a 5G story if things would be as simple as that. Vodafone disagrees...
5G gear 5G security standard Huawei
The top US cybersecurity policy diplomat, Rob strayer, praised Germany’s strict security standards for 5G network providers on Wednesday. The requirements include sections that call for the providers to utilize “trustworthy” equipment suppliers who comply with national security regulations related to secrecy and data protection. The issue of course being that Huawei in particular has some managerial, best practices and compliance issues in this area as seen in previous reports such as the UK’s Huawei Cyber Security Evaluation Centre. Rob strayer believes that this would “lead inevitably” to a banning of Huawei as an equipment provider. Strayer additionally indicated that this...
Huawei China US 5G
Excellent article today from the Washington Post: How China’s Huawei took the lead over U.S. companies in 5G technology Huawei, still the only 5G equipment manufacturing with the end-to-end offering, keeps evolving into the world’s biggest supplier of telecom equipment. It sparks fear into U.S. and the Trump administration about potential impacts on national security as well as U.S. technology supremacy. The rising global demand for 5G equipment highlights how the U.S., a technology leader in other respects, is largely absent from the wireless networking industry. 5G is expected to shape technological innovation for years to come, providing mobile data connections...
Germany 5G Security Standard
Germany’s auction of 5G spectrums reached 5 billion euros yesterday, in excess of expert estimates. The high price will mean that whilst the German government received a large amount of money to inject in improving their public digital infrastructure, it will simultaneously harm the capability of Telecoms to efficiently and quickly fund the construction of the 5G networks. Additional concerns for the Telecoms that managed to obtain a slice of the 5G spectrum is that they will have to build the 5G networks whilst living up to the stringent security requirements made by the government for the winning bidders of...
Swisscom 5G
Swisscom can claim to be the first European Telecom to have introduced commercial 5G. In co-operation with Qualcomm, Swisscom’s new 5G service will be tied in to the launch of several 5G phones in May and later such as the Oppo Reno 5G. The service is, until then, unusable to all. 5G is an expensive undertaking and so to recoup some of the costs its likely many Telecoms will do the same as Swisscom by partnering up with manufacturers to only allow early adopters on expensive new phones access to their 5G networks at first. Firstly, because usually only the...
Verizon 5G
Verizon put out a lot of effort in becoming the first telecom in the world to launch a commercial 5G network on April 3rd. Just hours before the South Korean carriers launched on the 4th, Verizon had date stamped their launch on April the 3rd. Troubles are abound as is wont to happen with new technology launch. The issues are that signal can only be received in a few parts of the two launch cities of Chicago and Minneapolis. Additionally, it would only operate with a specific phone, the Motorola Z3, working with a custom-add on pack which would enable...
Germany 5G Security Standard
German 5G auction ended this week with the sum of highest bids reaching €3.723 billion. Showing the level of commitment to 5G, but also causing some concerns of telcos' ability to invest in building the infrastructure after large spend on the spectrum. Mobile UK 5G Report
Mobile UK, the UK mobile network operators' trade association, issued a report "The Impact on the UK of a Restriction on Huawei in the Telecoms Supply Chain" outlining potential risk to UK economy if use of Huawei for 5G rollout is restricted. Some key findings from the report include: A partial to full restriction on Huawei in the telecoms supply chain could result in an 18 – 24 month delay to the widespread availability of 5G in the UK. The cost to the UK economy of a delay in rollout is calculated at between £4.5bn and £6.8bn. As well as the measurable...
